What I've Learned This Year
In "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)," he (speaking in her voice) says:
"If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape
I'm the lady you've looked for, write to me, and escape."
I had always thought it was
"If you like making love at midnight, in the dooms of a cave.
I'm the lady you've looked for, write to me, and escape."
I had always appreciated the blend of the bubbly (champagne, getting caught in the rain) and the macabre (she likes to...you know... in a cave! With spiders and bats!) Sure, "dooms of a cave" was pretty idiomatic. Or maybe just plain strange. But what is pop music for, if not to fiddle with the English language a bit?
The world seem smaller, somehow, now that I know.

Yesterday I was singing along with the jukebox at the Icecream place
"I-I-I-I-I'm not your steppin' stool!"
My oh-so-helpful friend pointed out that in the classic Monkees song, it was a steppin' STONE that I was not. I think stool makes a great deal more sense, casting this 'chick' in the song as a far more conniving creature, since she is strategizing her way to the top!
I stand by my 'improvement,' as should you.
